Understanding Orthodontic Treatment

Orthodontic treatment involves a variety of appliances, techniques, and technologies designed to create healthy, confident smiles with proper bite function and long-term stability. Below is a helpful guide to common orthodontic terms, parts of braces, and treatment procedures you may hear throughout treatment at Montclair Orthodontics.

Parts of Braces & Orthodontic Appliances

Appliance

Any orthodontic device used to move teeth, guide jaw growth, or improve bite alignment.

Archwire

The metal wire connected to your braces that guides teeth into their proper positions throughout treatment. Archwires are adjusted periodically as treatment progresses.

Band

A metal ring cemented around a tooth that provides support for orthodontic appliances and brackets.

Bond

The secure attachment created by orthodontic adhesive that holds brackets or appliances in place.

Bracket

A small metal or ceramic attachment bonded to the front of a tooth that holds the archwire in place.

Coil Spring

A small spring placed over the archwire to create or maintain space between teeth.

Elastic (Rubber Band)

Small rubber bands worn between the upper and lower teeth to help improve bite alignment.

Elastic Tie

Tiny colored or clear elastic rings that hold the archwire into the brackets.

Headgear

An orthodontic appliance occasionally used to guide jaw growth and tooth movement in growing patients.

Hook

A small attachment used to connect rubber bands (elastics).

Ligature

A fine wire or elastic tie used to secure the archwire to the brackets.

Lip Bumper

A removable appliance used to create additional space in the lower arch by guiding the position of the lower molars.

Mouthguard

A protective appliance worn during sports or physical activities to help protect the teeth and braces from injury.

Palatal Expander

An orthodontic appliance used to widen the upper jaw and improve bite alignment and spacing.

Invisalign® Palatal Expander (IPE)

A removable, digitally designed alternative to traditional expanders that gradually widens the upper jaw using a series of custom expanders.

Retainer

An appliance worn after active orthodontic treatment to help maintain tooth alignment and prevent shifting. Retainers may be removable or fixed behind the teeth.

Separator / Spacer

A small rubber ring placed between teeth to create space before orthodontic bands are fitted.

Tie Wire

A thin wire used to hold the archwire securely in the bracket.

Orthodontic Wax

Soft wax used to reduce irritation from braces or appliances by creating a smooth protective surface.
